Settlement History of japan
"The first recorded patterns started in the 7th century, the Taika Era of Japan. Ri (villages) were formed, and gun (districts) grouped together these Ri. These Gun were grouped to from 60 Kuni, or provinces. Every district was formed to be geographically independent - every district had seas, basins, and mountains. Teh core region where the capital called the Kinai" (http://japandemographics.weebly.com/settlement-patterns.html, 2013).
Local difference is found in the settlement patterns of villages. Some are bunched together, like those of the Kinki-Chiho, others are dispersed, as of those in North-eastern Shikoku, some are elongated, like the Niigata-Heiya on the rows of sand dunes, and others are scattered on steep mountain slopes.
As far as we know, Japan is close to the ocean. Therefore, fishing was a major way to get food for Japanese people in all ages. "It started to become very popular in the early 17th century, when fishing began to move northward through Japan. Fishing villages are most common in the south-west, and these places have a practised exchange economy. Villages that don't fish produce rice or depend on other villages to produce rice and fish for them" (http://japandemography.weebly.com/settlement-patterns.html, 2013). People chose to live here because of the location of foods and comfortable climates.

Japan Population Fall:
Japan's population had its sharpest decline ever last year as deaths outnumbered births, posing an escalating economic threat to growth prospects amid a global recession. woman aged between 15 and 49 - would rise slightly to 1.36 in 2008 from 1.34 in 2007. Exact figures for 2008 were unavailable. The country's fertility rate is far lower than that of the US, 2.10, and France, 1.98.
In recent years, the government has tried to encourage women to have more babies. But it is rare for fathers to take paternity in Japan, where traditional values tend to keep mothers at home.

Population pyramids
The images above show the population pyramids of Japan in two different time periods. We can see the current distribution of population and the 2050 projected distribution in Japan by using these population pyramids. As we can see, the total population of Japan will be decreased in the future. However, the ageing population will be severer in 2050. By analyzing the data, we found that women live longer than men generally.
